Report: Chelsea are now chasing 'exceptional' midfielder who Man City let go for free

Chelsea could be set to add to their midfield despite already having a very strong one.

Chelsea currently have Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Romeo Lavia and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in their squad.

This season, Caicedo has arguably been the best midfielder in the Premier League. Frank Leboeuf has put Caicedo’s influence up there with Rodri’s.

Nevertheless, it looks like Chelsea could still end up bringing in another player for the engine room next year.

Chelsea pursuing Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha

One midfielder who is currently being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha.

The Blues, though, could face competition for his signature if they do decide to make a move for him.

According to Bild, Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle United are all chasing the 24-year-old.

A move to either club would see Nmecha return to England. The German was on Manchester City’s books before joining Wolfsburg on a free transfer in 2021.

There has also been talk about Chelsea being interested in Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. But with the France U21 international still being 17 years of age, he would likely be one for the future.

What type of midfielder is Felix Nmecha?

Should Chelsea go on to sign Nmecha, then Enzo Maresca could be getting his hands on a very versatile midfielder.

His manager, Nuri Sahin, recently discussed the different midfield roles Nmecha can play and described his profile as “exceptional”.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, which has been shared by BVB Buzz, Sahin said: “I can only judge him based on the last ten or eleven months. But I think he has everything, he has an exceptional profile for a midfielder. He can play in the number six role, but can also play at number eight and ten.”

You can see, then, why Chelsea would be fans of Nmecha. However, it makes little sense for the Germany international to leave Dortmund, where he is playing regularly, to join Maresca’s side, where he would likely be a bench player.

Because of Caicedo, Fernandez and Lavia, it is going to be extremely difficult for any midfielder to break into that Chelsea team, just ask Dewsbury-Hall.
