Spain, buoyed by the support of their travelling fans, ended the year on a high note against France.
Mariona Caldentey, the Mallorcan forward who made the switch to Arsenal from Barcelona this year, emerged as a true leader on the pitch, orchestrating play from the midfield and attacking lines.
Operating across all areas of the pitch, she displayed an impressive versatility—moving effortlessly from the left wing to a more central role, and from attack to midfield. Every aspect of Spain’s attacking flow seemed to originate from her.
Her standout performance began with a crucial role in Spain’s first goal, with her sharp pass to Aitana Bonmatí breaking the deadlock just six minutes into the match.
Caldentey was also involved in the third goal, starting the build-up, before calmly slotting home a penalty for the fourth.
From creating chances to executing finishes, her all-round involvement was impressive, and her responsibilities grew after Tere Abelleira‘s substitution, as she took over corner duties.
At 28, Caldentey is assuming a critical leadership role during a period of change for Spain.
With seasoned veterans like Alexia Putellas and Irene Paredes absent from the squad, she has become a natural leader, effortlessly adapting to the responsibility. This leadership extended beyond just her technical contributions; Caldentey was also reportedly pivotal in off-field activities, leading team talks and giving motivational speeches during Spain’s recent matches against Korea and this game against France.
Spanish coach Montse Tomé praised Caldentey after the match, highlighting her tactical intelligence and versatility. “Mariona said in the team talk that we had to win. Her understanding of the game stands out—she understands space, connects well with her teammates, and can be effective whether playing on the left or the right,” Tomé said.
