Thomas Frank has been rather frank with his opinion on Newcastle United this season.
His Brentford side face the Magpies on Saturday, as Newcastle United look to build on their fantastic performance against Liverpool.
Eddie Howe’s side looked back to their full throttle best, as Newcastle drew 3-3 with Liverpool. In truth, Newcastle should have won.
But Howe, the players and the fans will take immense encouragement from the performance. Now the challenge is to build on it, starting away to Brentford on Saturday.
That will be a very tough game, as the Bees are always challenging opponents. In fact, they are currently above Newcastle in the Premier League table on goal difference.
But Newcastle’s record away to Brentford is outstanding since they were promoted, with Eddie Howe winning three games in a row at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Newcastle United manager will hope to make it four, and Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been very kind in his assessment of the Magpies during his pre-match press conference.

“This season, I think they are back to the high level that they were at two years ago,” he said.
“I don’t think they’ve been rewarded enough with the points and results.
“They were brilliant at home to Arsenal, they were brilliant on Wednesday night at home to Liverpool, they were very good away to Chelsea – they were unlucky not to get something out of that game – at home to West Ham, they absolutely dominated them.
“So I think it’s an Eddie Howe team that is at its best and will be a big test for us; this will be the biggest test that we have faced at home so far this season.”
Brentford boss is being too kind about Newcastle
Frank is never going to talk down about Newcastle United, or any opponent. That would not be a very classy move.
However, on this occasion, it feels like he is a little bit over the top with his praise of the Magpies.
There have been games when Newcastle have played well and got nothing, but there have also been instances of the opposite happening. At the start of the 2024/25 campaign, Howe’s players were really poor, yet kept getting results.
Inconsistency is the reason why Newcastle are not as high up the table as they would hope, but Frank is right about how well they played against Liverpool. There was real improvement, while Newcastle lived up to Howe’s pre-match attacking claim after a couple of limp displays in front of goal.
That should give Howe’s side real confidence, as they prepare to take on a Brentford team that lost 3-1 to Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
