Gary Lineker points out decision referee got wrong in Liverpool's Newcastle draw

Gary Lineker thinks referee Andy Madley made a key mistake during Liverpool's 3-3 draw with Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Reds fans were less-than impressed with Madley's performance on the night, with many questioning the decision to book Alexis Mac Allister for what appeared to be a soft foul in the first half.

That booking means the midfielder will serve a one-match suspension, and will miss Saturday's Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

There was also the case of Liverpool thinking it should have received a penalty in the dying moments of the game after Mac Allister's shot appeared to be blocked by the arm of Dan Burn - but Madley waved away the appeals and gave a corner instead.

Newcastle, on the other hand, could have been awarded a penalty when Jarell Quansah appeared to trip Alexander Isak inside the area, but the referee decided the defender had won the ball fairly.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Lineker wasn't so sure about that, and declared he felt it was a foul.

Martin Keown said: “The defender dives in, I’m going to go with the ref because that’s what we want to do in the game, but, Gary, that looks like a penalty to me. I’m not certain he gets a touch on that.”

Micah Richards responded: “He gets a little touch there, but he gets Isak as well,” before Lineker concluded: “But it’s still a foul, it’s a foul."

There was controversy at the full-time whistle, too, as Madley blew up while the ball was in the air from a long throw by Nick Pope, which set Isak free inside the Newcastle half.

Lineker wasn't too thrilled about that, either, saying: “There there’s this, full-time, the referee blows when the ball is at the halfway line doesn’t he? I guess if time is up, time is up."
