Aston Villa were only in action on Wednesday night but attention has quickly turned to this weekend’s clash against Southampton.
Aston Villa were 3-1 victors over Brentford last time out, putting an end to their eight-match winless run in style to move up to seventh.
For Unai Emery and his players, now is the opportunity to build some momentum heading into the hectic Christmas schedule, starting with a home tie against Southampton.
Chances of increasing confidence and points tallies don’t come much better than playing the Saints right now, as they’re rock bottom of the Premier League with just a solitary win to their name.
Russell Martin’s men were beaten 5-1 by Chelsea in midweek despite initially equalising in the first half, and Aston Villa will be looking to inflict similar damage on Saturday.
Ahead of the game kicking off, Paul Merson has issued his prediction and it’s one many will agree with.

Paul Merson predicts the result of Aston Villa vs Southampton clash
On Wednesday, Villa looked back to their best as Morgan Rogers was compared to Dennis Bergkamp after scoring a delightful opener.
Elsewhere, Ollie Watkins was in the thick of the action, assisting Rogers with his strike and scoring a penalty of his own.

Now, the deadly duo will be looking to carry their stunning display across to Villa Park on Saturday, and Merson is confident they will.
Predicting a comfortable 3-0 win for the hosts, Merson wrote in his column for Sportskeeda: “This will surely be another win for Aston Villa, I don’t see it panning out any differently. At this rate, Southampton could be gone by December! They started alright against Chelsea, but eventually proved they haven’t learned anything from their mistakes.
“Villa were excellent when they got back to winning ways against Brentford. Morgan Rogers scored a wonderful goal and Ollie Watkins also found the back of the net in that 3-1 win. They must be really confident and I don’t see any reason why they won’t win again on Saturday.”
Paul Merson’s recent Aston Villa predictions
The former Arsenal forward has joined many in predicting Villa to see off Southampton on Saturday, but how has he fared throughout the campaign?
Merson had a feeling Villa would beat Brentford on Wednesday, predicting Emery’s men to win 2-1, and that of course came true.
In the game before, he also got the result right, as Merson predicted Chelsea to beat Villa 3-1, and that match unfortunately ended 3-0 to the Blues.
Meanwhile, in the first game after the international break, Merson felt the Villans would overcome Crystal Palace 2-0 however, that fixture ended in a disappointing draw.
Overall, he’s been pretty reliable with his assessment of Emery’s side and they’ll be hoping that is the case this weekend.
