A day of **West Ham** hope has turned into stagnation with the news that [Julen Lopetegui](https://www.claretandhugh.info/julen-lopetegui/) will be given one more game to turn his Hammers fortunes around.
It concludes a day of waiting on the results of various board meetings and one-on-one interviews with the under-fire West Ham head coach, which has ended in an act of Houdini-like escapology.
However, what has become glaringly evident is that whoever made the decision to hire Lopetegui recruited the wrong man.
Sky Sports began running quotes attributed to Lopetegui this afternoon, confirming that the Spaniard had been mandated with creating a more attractive team that generated more chances.
In effect, the club hired a defensive manager and tasked him with playing a more expansive game. This goes some way to explaining why the team doesn’t function. In essence, West Ham appear to have hired an opera singer and are now wondering why his rapping isn’t up to scratch.
The whole situation is a complete and utter shambles, and quite frankly, it’s embarrassing. Lopetegui may or may not get a win against Wolves on Monday, but to what end? It’s hard to believe the board have any real faith that results against Bournemouth, Brighton, and Liverpool will follow, though a win against Southampton will likely keep the 58-year-old in place.
It’s a shame this indecisive and muddled thinking continues to permeate the club, but it highlights just how far behind most Premier League outfits we really are.
