Aston Villa have won and it’s been a long time since fans have been able to say that!
Before a ball was kicked on Wednesday night, many knew this was a huge week because of the two home games on the horizon.
Aston Villa deservedly beat Brentford and now they await bottom-of-the-table Southampton at the weekend.
The great thing about all of this was that the 3-1 win was deserved and it should have been more.
If Thomas Frank had watched his side concede six here, then he wouldn’t have had many complaints because Aston Villa created clear-cut chance after clear-cut chance during the match – ten shots on target alone to Brentford’s nine in general.
Many probably expected Unai Emery to make wholesale changes from Villa’s defeat to Chelsea last time out.
But he only brought two players back to the fold – Tyrone Mings for Pau Torres and Leon Bailey for the much-criticised Jaden Philogene.
It worked a treat because, by the 34th minute, the home side were 3-0 up, thanks to a well-taken Morgan Rogers goal from the edge of the box, an Ollie Watkins penalty and a brilliant Matty Cash volley.

Amadou Onana hails Boubacar Kamara after Aston Villa beat Brentford
Boubacar Kamara’s season-ending injury in February was a massive blow to the team, and since then, they have defensively collapsed.
But, hopefully, Kamara can stay out of the treatment room and start games on a regular basis because he is a certain starter and a huge player for this side.
The France international simply posted ‘win’ on Instagram after the game against Brentford, with his midfield partner, Onana, adding in the comments section ‘what a player’.
Lucas Digne sent fire emojis to the defensive midfielder and fans rightfully called him ‘underrated’ and a ‘genius’ in the comments section.
Kamara’s stats for Villa against Brentford
Sometimes stats don’t do players justice and that’s the case here.
Kamara was heavily involved in Villa’s opening goal, it was his ability to bypass the opposition’s press from deep, shrug away a few men, build the ball from the back, feed it forward and then allow his teammates to roam forward in all that space.
He does that time and time again. Just his presence in front of the backline is underrated and it has been very much missed for large parts of 2024.
Either way, WhoScored rated his performance against Brentford at 6.26, but you feel he deserves more.
