Paul Merson joked that he was ready to hide himself from view after Everton turned his pre-match prediction on its head against Wolves.

The Sky Sports pundit posted on X (4 December) with a well-known Simpsons gif in the wake of the Toffees’ 4-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday, suggesting that he himself was backing into a hedge.

Merson had backed Wolves to come away from Goodison Park as 2-1 winners due to them “scoring goals for fun” of late and the hosts not scoring enough coming into their must-win match.

However, Merson’s prediction couldn’t have been further from the truth, as Sean Dyche’s side put Wolves to the sword in a deserved four-goal thumping, and seeing a further two strikes ruled out.

Everton prove Paul Merson wrong with massive Wolves win

While Merson appeared to be spot-on in his verdict that the Toffees weren’t scoring anywhere near enough goals this season, they certainly rectified that with a dominant attacking display at Goodison.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Moving the ball forward at will and seeing their set-pieces work to near-perfection, Dyche’s side could have racked up more than their four goals which counted, and the six times they had the ball in the net.

Ashley Young scoring a sensational free-kick just 10 minutes in suggested the Blues had taken Merson’s prediction personally, with James Tarkowski having a goal disallowed before Orel Mangala made it 2-0.

Craig Dawson’s double of own-goals certainly gave the Toffees a helping hand in the second half, with the only downside for Dyche being that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still yet to break his own drought.

However, having dominated Wolves at both ends, it’s likely that Merson’s prediction next time out, for the final Merseyside Derby in front of the Grand Old Lady, won’t see Everton counted out quite as easily.

In other Everton news, Andy Townsend slammed Farhad Moshiri’s record at Goodison amid calls for Sean Dyche to be sacked.
