Evangelos Marinakis reveals the one reason he chose to buy Nottingham Forest

Evangelos Marinakis gave an interview recently with Rob Dorsett, and he revealed the one thing that made him want to buy Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest were purchased by Evangelos Marinakis all the way back in 2017.

The Greek billionaire has transformed Nottingham Forest, helping fund training ground improvements and being supportive in transfer windows.

This has seen Forest become genuine European challengers in the current campaign, and there’s no doubt set to be a big January transfer window on the horizon.

Marinakis has already admitted that he wants to invest in January to aid this European push, with it being a dream of his to get Forest back into the big time.

Interestingly, he’s also been speaking about his purchase of the club.

Evangelos Marinakis reveals reason behind buying Nottingham Forest

Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Marinakis had won the European Golden Boy Career Award earlier on this week, which was won by Cesc Fabregas in 2023.

Marinakis is looking to build on the legacy he’s built by expanding his multi-club model, with clubs in Asia, Europe and South America being eyed.

MORE FOREST STORIES

However, it’s the purchase of Nottingham Forest that Evangelos Marinakis has been talking about recently, as he appeared in an interview on Sky Sports.

“For me, that was the target from the beginning. When I first said it, people said it’s crazy or it’s b*******. But, for me, this is important, otherwise I wouldn’t do it. If Forest weren’t a big team, I wouldn’t get involved. For me, it’s the memories that I have.

“It was when I was first visiting England and then I stayed in England. That was at the beginning of the 1980s and there were two teams at the time: Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. They wore the same colour as Olympiacos red. We’re talking about thousands or millions of supporters.

“You can see it with the teams that I’m involved with, these two teams in Greece and in England. Olympiacos is the biggest team, by far, in Greece. Half of the Greek population supports Olympiacos and Nottingham Forest is one of the very big teams in England, both in what we have achieved and also with the supporter base. For me, this is very important.”

Evangelos Marinakis to steal Edu for his multi-club model

Evangelos Marinakis has enlisted the help of Edu for his multi-club model.

It’s believed that his contacts can help with talks over buying Vasco de Gama, but it won’t be simple as they face competition from Andrea Radrizzani.

Nottingham Forest are still very much of importance to Marinakis, despite all these plans to buy different clubs in different areas of the world.

Plus, with Edu’s experience in the Premier League, he could play a big part at the City Ground.
