'Carragher and Gerrard': Peter Crouch shares how Liverpool players used to prepare for playing Everton

Liverpool play Everton in the Premier League on Saturday for the final time at Goodison Park.

The famous old ground has played host to countless Merseyside Derbies since the Toffees moved across from Anfield in 1892.

Given their very firm status as the second club in Liverpool, Everton have lost far more of those matches than they would have liked to.

But, nevertheless, it’s perhaps true that a trip to Goodison is more difficult for the Reds than any other team in the Premier League.

Although they have almost always been the better performing club over the past 20 years, Liverpool have still found it tough to win at Everton.

One period where the Blues were at their best was during Peter Crouch’s time at the club. And looking back on that ahead of Saturday’s game, Crouch has recalled how Liverpool used to prepare to face Everton.

Peter Crouch makes Merseyside Derby point

Crouch never managed to score in five appearances against Everton for Liverpool.

He was also on the receiving end of a terrible 3-0 loss at Goodison back in 2006.

That result would have particularly stung Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher who joined Crouch in the team that day.

Both Scousers brought through the Liverpool academy, Gerrard and Carragher knew exactly what this fixture meant to the fanbase. And speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, Crouch said that the Liverpool squad relied on the two of them to prepare for the match.

“This game is bigger than others and there are Scousers in the team so I imagine they’ll be telling them,” said the former striker when looking ahead to Saturday’s clash.

“For us we had Carragher and Gerrard, the local lads in the team that live and breathe it. So, we knew about this game months in advance! And when it was coming up there was constant chat about it, it was about keeping your mouth shut before the game, doing your job. Because you don’t want to be one of those ones where you say something and wind the opposition up, we were quite hot on that.

“But they were tough games when I was at Liverpool, really tough games. They had a good side but I think the gulf is bigger now.”

Peter Crouch predicts big Liverpool win

As well as looking briefly back on his own experience of the Merseyside Derby, Crouch predicted the score for Saturday’s game.

Everton have had another difficult season so far but a 4-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday means they will be bouncing into this one.

Meanwhile, Liverpool threw away two points against Newcastle on the same night.

But despite the Reds’ poor display on Tyneside, Crouch still backed his old club for a 3-0 win on Saturday.

After losing 2-0 at Goodison last time out, that would be the perfect way to mark Liverpool’s general dominance at the stadium over the years.
