'Would not surprise me': Jason Cundy makes prediction about Chelsea's Moises Caicedo ahead of Tottenham

Chelsea travel to London rivals Tottenham this weekend for their next match in great spirits.

Chelsea’s 5-1 away win over Southampton in midweek has lifted them up to second in the Premier League. In fact, the Blues are on a four-game winning streak across all competitions since returning from the November international break.

In contrast, Spurs sit 10th in the league table because of their crazy inconsistency this season.

Paul Merson tips Chelsea to beat Spurs in their upcoming showdown, claiming they’ve got better players in nearly every position.

Jason Cundy suggests Moises Caicedo may start at right-back vs Tottenham

While previewing the upcoming clash between Spurs and Chelsea, Jason Cundy made the suggestion that Moises Caicedo could end up starting at right-back again.

Caicedo, 23, impressed at full-back in last weekend’s 3-0 home win over Aston Villa. The fact that he shifted over to right-back made room for Blues teammates Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia to start as the midfield pivot.

Cundy told talkSPORT: “If Caicedo starts at right-back [against Tottenham], it would not surprise me. What you get is the luxury of having Lavia, Enzo, who’s been brilliant, by the way, recently, and Caicedo in the same team. I can’t square that circle if you put Malo Gusto at right-back.”

There’s no doubt that Caicedo is a key player in the Chelsea squad right now. The fact that him and Cole Palmer are the only Blues players to start every league match so far this season underlines that.

Caicedo is an all-action central midfielder playing some of his best football this campaign. It’s interesting to see him play a different role so effectively as well, though.

During the Villa win, Caicedo was a right-back on the field when Chelsea didn’t have possession. However, he then moved more centrally into his familiar midfield spot when his team had the ball, something that could work well again at Spurs.

Caicedo was outstanding against Villa in the hybrid role, which is a good way of squeezing more of Chelsea’s top-class midfielders into the same side, like Cundy mentions above.

Moises Caicedo will be vital against Spurs

Whether he starts at right-back or midfield, Chelsea’s Caicedo is going to be an important player in Sunday’s match.

Even though Spurs are struggling against lesser opponents this season, they tend to raise their levels for the big games. In particular, they do have talent and stamina in the centre of the park with the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma.

Craig Burley has praised Caicedo’s work off the ball, describing the Chelsea enforcer as a leech that is so good at winning the ball back.

It might be a good idea for the Blues to have the trio of Caicedo, Lavia and Fernandez on the pitch together at Spurs to ensure they win the midfield battle.
