‘Wow’: Virgil van Dijk shocked at what he's heard about Everton fans ahead of the Merseyside…

Everton fans will play a huge part in facing Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Goodison Park can be a real fortress when the Everton fans get going, and that’s what will be required on Saturday with Liverpool in town.

The noise was deafening last time out against Wolves, as a 4-0 win sent Goodison Park into a frenzy.

However, Liverpool will provide a different challenge, currently sitting top of the Premier League table.

Form does go out of the window when it comes to derby days, as we saw last season when Everton ran out 2-0 winners at Goodison Park.

Interestingly, Virgil van Dijk has been speaking about that loss last season, and shared what surprised him about something the Everton fans chanted.

Virgil van Dijk shocked at Everton chant from Goodison Park

Virgil van Dijk has been reflecting on the Newcastle draw and spoke out about a chant that Everton fans sung at Goodison Park back in April.

However, it appears as if this is the first time he’s heard it, which is hard to believe.

The Dutchman (as per Liverpool Echo) was surprised after hearing Everton fans chanted ‘you lost the league at Goodison Park’ and said they can say whatever they want.

“Who said that (Goodison defeat ended title hopes)?! Wow!

“They can chat whatever they want! That game was very disappointing in so many ways but Saturday is another opportunity.

“It’s a game where they will definitely be up for it but so will we. I’m really looking forward to it, going there with our fans but we all know we have to improve – especially from the first half in terms of the fight in a good way.”

Everton team news for the Merseyside derby

Sean Dyche has a decision to make at the pinnacle of the attack.

Armando Broja impressed in his little cameo at the end of the Wolves game, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin put in one of his better performances this season.

Meanwhile, having Abdoulaye Doucoure as a floater in midfield would work really well against Liverpool, as it gives the Toffees an extra man against their midfield three and supports a high press.

After all, Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool struggled with Newcastle’s aggressive approach midweek.
