‘It’s back to business’–Everton going for the win at Spurs says Sørensen

Everton manager Brian Sørensen says that the spirit in the camp is very good and that his side go to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend aiming to win.

The Blue Girls travel to The Gaughan Group Stadium to face The Lilywhites on Sunday afternoon.

Everton were 1-0 winners over Merseyside rivals Liverpool in their last Barclays Women’s Super League outing before the international break. Despite having had some players away on international duty, Sørensen says that a first league win of the season has given his side a real lift.

“The feeling is good,” Sørensen said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We had the week after the Liverpool game together before they were travelling [for international duty].

“There has been quite a lot of players in the building [in the last two weeks]. We’ve been training for quite a while and there’s a really good feeling. We are not overexcited; we know there are many games left and we still have a job to do but of course, it was a good feeling to finally get the three points.

“It’s back to business, it’s about getting our heads down, working hard and moving forward.”

Everton could leapfrog Spurs in the league table with a win this weekend but Sørensen says that the focus remains on performance.

He said “We don’t look at the table, we look at the performances and where the team is at. I have been happy with a lot of the performances but we weren’t always getting the result that we wanted.

“We know what we are capable of if we have everyone ready and we need that because we have such a thin squad.

“Can we get everyone ready for the weekend? Probably not. We might be missing just one or two and if that’s the case, we are still good enough to go and get a result at Spurs.”

Opponents Spurs have the worst defensive record in the entire division but Sørensen knows that the North Londoners are working on the frailties in their back-line.

He said “It’s going to be a tough challenge. They have very good players but we will see if we can hurt them because they’ve had some issues. In their last game against Aston Villa, they looked a bit better organised and that’s something they’ll have been working on. They have that attacking threat and have invested a lot of money in the last couple of years, so I’m sure they won’t be happy with where they are at the minute.

“It’s going to be an even game and we will try and go there and win it, that’s our aim.”

Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur kicks-off at 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
