Sao Paulo sporting director Carlos Belmonte has revealed Jamal Lewis could be sent back to Newcastle United in January.

Eyebrows were raised when the left-back - signed for £13million from Norwich City in 2020 - joined the Brazilian giants on loan. Lewis spent last season at Watford after falling down the pecking order at St James’ Park.

Once viewed as the long-term left-back at Newcastle, the 26-year-old’s career has stalled. Just 36 appearances over four-and-a-half years has made Lewis an outcast on Tyneside, with his last cameo being the 1-1 draw with Chelsea in May 2023.

Sao Paulo offered him a fresh challenge but an ankle injury has ruled him out for the past four games. The setback may require surgery - which would be season-ending - and the Brazilian club are already floating the idea of sending him back.

Speaking to UOL, sporting director Belmonte revealed a clause in the player’s contract allowing them to cut ties. He said: “The position is the board’s priority in the transfer market, and the dream is Wendell, from Porto. However, if the Portuguese club demands financial compensation, Sao Paulo will be in a complicated position in the deal.

“Jamal might not be (a Sao Paulo player soon). We have a clause in his contract – Newcastle could call him up at the start of the season, and we could return him. Our relationship with Newcastle is exceptional.

“He’s got an ankle problem and we’re making an assessment. It’s already been agreed with Newcastle (that) if he has to have surgery, he’ll go back for the surgery and the recovery process in England.”
