The fixture that cost Arsenal Premier League title as rivals face away day issue in pivotal weekend

The Premier League remains the priority goal for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal and after 14 matches they remain seven points adrift of leaders Liverpool and sit third, with only a two-goal advantage separating Chelsea and the Gunners.

Arsenal were able to overcome Manchester United in midweek giving them a boost as Liverpool were held to a 3-3 draw at Newcastle following a horrendous goalkeeping error. The closing of the gap was the first time this had happened since the start of September when the Reds' defeat at home to Nottingham Forest saw the Gunners move above them with a win at Tottenham.

Since, it has been full steam ahead for both Arne Slot and Enzo Maresca, as both sides have put together impressive runs. This weekend, though, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City all play away from home in four separate challenges.

Liverpool take on their Merseyside rivals Everton in what is likely to be the last derby at Goodison Park. A defeat in the same fixture last season ended Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of a final season title win and after their 4-0 win over Wolves, there is plenty of feel-good factor about this Toffees team again.

Chelsea go to a downbeat and hurting Tottenham side who just lost at Bournemouth. Ange Postecoglou faced huge pressure from supporters in the stands after the game and will be looking, with his depleted side, to take a victory over a Chelsea team that battered them with a bucket-load of goals in the same fixture in the previous campaign.

Meanwhile, Manchester City got back to winning ways for the first time in six matches as they beat Nottingham Forest. They will now travel to Crystal Palace, a ground notorious for scalps and one which the top three sides will certainly repeat once again.

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, however, have the opportunity to turn around a result which proved very costly last season. A 2-1 loss at Craven Cottage in December of 2023 proved to be a three-point deficit that separated Arsenal from a first league title in 20 years.

As the Gunners travel again to Fulham, they are in much better form and feeling. Last time they had just lost at home to West Ham whereas the four-game winning run they are on now sees them very dominant and free-scoring.

Set-pieces remain a key part of their attacking options and there will be hope some injured players like Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori might yet return. Win here and it will represent a three-point gain on last season’s respective scorelines and potentially a chance to take advantage of any of their own rivals' away trips this weekend.
