'Improving a lot': Enzo Maresca says Chelsea player is doing so much better of late

Performance levels across the entire Chelsea side have not been higher this season than they are right now.

Enzo Maresca has led his Chelsea side to second in the league, although has talked down any chances that they can compete for the title as soon as this season.

His strength in depth was on full display during Chelsea’s 5-1 win during the week against Southampton, where he made seven changes to his starting side.

Enzo Maresca really impressed by Enzo Fernandez

The manager did rely on a number of his key players to start again though, with one of those being Enzo Fernandez in the heart of midfield.

The World Cup winner has been beginning to contribute regularly to goals for Chelsea as of late, and had scored in his two previous games before the trip to the South Coast.

After a spell out of the team, Maresca has stated that he is delighted with how Fernandez has improved and understood what is required of him as of late.

He said in his pre-match press conference: “He is improving a lot especially in terms of understanding the game and the position. This is what we need from the attacking players. He has many things he can do better but not only him, all of the players.”

Fernandez’s return could see Moises Caicedo become permanent right-back

Despite being one of the best midfielders in the Premier League so far this season, Moises Caicedo starred in the right-back position against Aston Villa last weekend.

This setup has allowed all three of Caicedo, Fernandez and Romeo Lavia to feature in the starting side, with the trio making it very difficult to be dropped right now.

Maresca has hinted it could be in his plans for Caicedo to continue at right-back, with club captain Reece James remaining on the sidelines for the remainder of 2024.
