One of the highlights of the season so far for Liverpool was putting their terrible run against Real Madrid to bed in November.
After losing seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams, the Reds finally turned up to deliver a comfortable 2-0 win over Los Blancos.
For Real, the loss was not a totally unexpected one either. Carlo Ancelotti’s European champions have not been having the best season.
Travelling to Anfield they had lost two of their previous four games, including a pasting in La Liga against bitter rivals Barcelona.
For Liverpool supporters, there may be some glee to take from Real’s difficulties. With Madrid said to be circling Trent Alexander-Arnold, they are not exactly fans’ favourite club.
Nevertheless, some in the Liverpool squad clearly have friends playing for Real. And Darwin Nunez has made that abundantly clear with a heartfelt message this week.

Darwin Nunez reaches out to Federico Valverde
Nunez had a good performance against Madrid in November. Even though he didn’t score that night, the 25-year-old still turned up well.
Since then, though, things have take another disappointing turn. Nunez was poor against Newcastle on Wednesday, leading to question marks over his position at Liverpool.

Nunez has received plenty of criticism during his two-and-a-bit years at Anfield so far.
So when he saw Uruguay teammate Federico Valverde post an apologetic message on Instagram after a mistake against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, he clearly felt the need to show his support.

“Head up brother, you always leave everything and deaf ears to those critics that are everywhere,” wrote the Liverpool No.9.
“Always with you brother.”
Could Valverde join Liverpool?
Valverde has been linked with Liverpool many times over the past few transfer windows.
The 26-year-old could well be the perfect player to add to the Liverpool squad.
Nevertheless, having become a key man in Madrid, it now seems incredibly unlikely that Valverde will ever turn up at Anfield.
As recently as November there were claims that Man City may look to sign Valverde for a reported fee of £58m.
If the Uruguay international genuinely is available for that kind of fee, then Liverpool should certainly be thinking about another approach to Real Madrid. He clearly already has a friend to make him feel welcome.
