Liverpool set sights on Barcelona captain as replacement for Real Madrid target

A recent report from Fichajes has claimed that Real Madrid are eyeing a move for Ryan Gravenberch as they look to shore up their ranks in midfield.

Real Madrid have had a difficult time with injuries this season, and with Luka Modric unlikely to continue beyond the summer of 2025, the club have identified Gravenberch as an ideal addition to the team.

Gravenberch’s potential move to the Santiago Bernabeu, though, could create a domino effect, which could force Liverpool to scour the market for a replacement.

Liverpool eye move for De Jong

To that end, the report adds that Liverpool might go after none other than Frenkie de Jong, in their bid to replace Gravenberch.

De Jong’s profile and style of play make him an ideal addition to the Liverpool side, who will be looking to add more experience and quality to the team.

It must be noted that Arne Slot, being a Dutchman, will be aware of what de Jong is capable of, despite his relatively difficult start to the new season.

The former Ajax star has indeed found it difficult to earn a place in Hansi Flick’s starting XI, largely due to the existing core combination of Pedri and Marc Casado.

The performances of these two individuals have kept de Jong on the bench, though the midfielder has had his fair share of problems with fitness as well.

An ideal sale for Barcelona?

Barcelona, therefore, could be open to selling de Jong if Liverpool do come knocking on the door. This is relevant, especially given the fact that the club require player sales to generate fresh revenue.

Furthermore, given the midfielder’s contract situation, a sale in the summer of 2025 would make sense if there is no agreement over a renewal.

Flick has recently set his sights on Tijjani Reijnders as one of his prime targets in midfield. Should de Jong leave, the club may have a chance at signing the AC Milan star.
