Frank Lampard can help Chelsea complete four January transfers with£17m solution

The January transfer window is quickly approaching and preparations for that gap will be well underway for clubs looking to do business - both in and out - and that will be no different at Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca will be assessing his squad, but the Chelsea head coach may have been given an opportunity in the window thanks to a managerial change at another club. Former Chelsea midfielder and head coach Frank Lampard has taken over from Mark Robins at Championship side Coventry City.

His obvious relationship with Chelsea could now come in useful for both teams. For the Sky Blues, it will be about strengthening up the squad as they look to pull away from the bottom section of the EFL Championship standings.

For Chelsea, it could be an opportunity to give young players a chance to play first-team football and continue to develop their game and build on their experience. Championship clubs are allowed to name up to five loan players in any matchday squad, but they are able to register more.

With that in mind, here are four Chelsea players who could, potentially, make the move to the Championship on a temporary basis;

Lucas Bergstrom

Coventry City have recently changed their starting goalkeeper - with Brad Collins replacing Oliver Dovin between the sticks for the last four Championship games. It could indicate that it may be an area they look to strengthen in January.

One option could be a loan deal for Chelsea's Bergstrom. The 22-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with Swedish side Brommapojkarna - but his only appearances for the Blues since his return has been for the development squad in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

He has, however, been an unused substitute in three of the four Europa Conference League games. A loan deal to the Championship could be the perfect opportunity for him to get more regular game time.

Kaiden Wilson

Centre-back Wilson has been a regular with Chelsea's development squad in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy this season after stepping up from the club's U18 side. The next stage of his development will be to go on loan and experience first-team football. Coventry currently have four natural centre-backs to choose from, so it could be an area that Lampard will look to strengthen.

Deivid Washington

Looking at the other end of the pitch, most clubs are always keen to add firepower to their squad for the second half of the campaign. After moving to Chelsea from Santos for £17m in the summer of 2023, Washington has made just three first-team appearances for Chelsea with all of those coming last season.

His only appearances so far this campaign have come with their development squad. He could, therefore, look to leave on a temporary deal in search of game time - a move to the Championship could be what is needed.

Alex Matos

What better for a young central midfielder than learning from one of the best in that position? Matos is another regular member of Chelsea's development squad this season.

He spent the second half of last season on loan with Championship outfit Huddersfield - where he scored once in 19 appearances in the league. Another move back to the Championship could aid his development. A move to the Coventry Building Society Arena will also have the added bonus of him linking up with Lampard - who ought to be able to give him valuable advice on his central midfield role.
