Liverpool and Everton have released a joint statement advising fans to take extra caution when travelling to and from Saturday’s Merseyside derby.

Storm Darragh is expected to cause widespread disruption with the Met Office release a rare red warning for parts of the UK on Saturday.

And with wind gusts of up to 70mph expected on Merseyside, the Premier League rivals are asking fans to leave for the match at Goodison Park earlier than normal to avoid issue.

“Supporters attending Saturday's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park are advised to allow extra time for travel and remain alert to Met Office weather warnings," the clubs said.

“An amber severe wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Merseyside from 1am GMT on Saturday, with wind gusts of 60mph to 70mph likely. The warning for wind is expected to remain in place until 6am on Sunday.

“Given the weather warning, fans are advised to allow extra time for their journey and take extra care.

“Supporters are also advised to keep a close eye on travel and weather guidance in their area to assist with travel planning for the Premier League fixture (12.30pm kick-off).”

After the Welsh FA announced that all matches in Wales have been postponed, Cardiff City's clash with Watford in the Championship was called off.

Newport County's game at home to Carlisle United in League Two, however, is currently still scheduled to go ahead. In Devon, Plymouth Argyle confirmed that their Championship match against Oxford United had been postponed.

The Merseyside derby takes place at lunchtime in what will be the fixture's final game at Goodison Park. However, it may well be played amid a swirling wind. Luckily local fans won't be overly hit by travel issues, given the proximity of the clubs.

Manchester United are at home on Saturday evening, hosting Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. They, like Burnley, are based slightly to the east of the warning areas so may miss out on the extreme conditions.
