Drogba’s simple solution to stop Arsenal’s corners

Didier Drogba has suggested a straightforward way to counter Arsenal’s growing reputation as set-piece specialists, following their remarkable success from corners this season.

No team in Europe has matched Arsenal’s 22 goals from corners since the beginning of last season.

Their clinical execution was on full display during their midweek win over Manchester United, with both Jurrien Timber and William Saliba scoring from corner routines.

Fans at the Emirates revelled in their side’s proficiency, chanting “set-piece again, ole, ole, ole,” highlighting a tactic that has become a key part of Mikel Arteta’s strategy.

Much of the credit has gone to set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, as well as the accurate deliveries of Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.

Rice explained the preparation behind his corner deliveries, saying: “It’s about watching clips, understanding the weight needed on the ball, and practicing it repeatedly. I could’ve had a couple of assists [against Manchester United].”

However, Drogba believes the solution to Arsenal’s corner routines is relatively simple.

Commenting on an Instagram post analysing their set-piece success, the former Chelsea striker advised putting a player 10 metres in front of the corner taker to obstruct their delivery.

He added: “Ask your goalkeeper to deal with any loose balls and ensure the defenders protect him.” The shrugging emoji accompanying his comment suggested Drogba feels the problem is easily addressed.

Despite their efficiency from set-pieces, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta dismissed suggestions that his team is overly reliant on them. Comparisons to Stoke City’s direct approach under Tony Pulis in the late 2000s were swiftly rebuffed.

Arteta said: “We aim to be effective from every phase of play, not just set-pieces. Last season, we scored the most goals in this club’s history because of the variety in our attacking approach. We want to create magical, individual moments as well.”

Currently third in the Premier League, Arsenal trail leaders Liverpool by seven points but remain firmly in the title race. Their ability to capitalise on set-pieces, combined with their overall attacking threat, has made them a formidable opponent.

Whether Drogba’s suggestions will be tested remains to be seen, but Arsenal’s set-piece dominance is proving to be one of their most reliable weapons this season.
