Apart from Kylian Mbapp, Aurelien Tchouameni was one of the main players singled out after Real Madrid’s disappointing defeat to Athletic Club on Wednesday.
The French midfielder returned directly to the starting XI after a month-long absence due to an ankle sprain, but his performance once again left more questions than answers, which has become a recurring theme this season.
Tchouameni struggled to impact the game for Real Madrid and was also overwhelmed in his supposed area of strength – defensive duties. He recovered just one ball during the 72 minutes he spent on the pitch.
Another start beckons
Despite that, unless there is a surprise in the line-up, Tchouameni is expected to start this Saturday against Girona in Montilivi, reports Mundo Deportivo.
It is a venue that holds fond memories for the Frenchman, as it was where he scored his first goal for Real Madrid. This came during the first half of the last season in a 3-0 victory for Ancelotti’s side.
And, following his disappointing comeback from injury vs Athletic, Tchouameni will hope to put up an improved showing on a ground where he has happy memories from his previous visit.
Not good enough

Tchouameni’s limited influence in Real Madrid’s system has been a consistent issue this season, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s continued praise and backing of the midfielder for his physical presence.
While Eduardo Camavinga (currently injured) has become increasingly settled in the pivot role after months of clear development, Tchouameni’s evolution seems to have somewhat stalled this season.
Last season, the 24-year-old had a fairly solid campaign, playing both as a centre-back and a pivot. However, a foot injury prevented him from participating in the final stretch, including the Champions League final.
This season, his position at the club has become more uncertain than ever as Real Madrid struggle with an identity crisis following the departure of Toni Kroos.
For Ancelotti, Tchouameni is a versatile player due to his ability to perform in two positions and he continues to trust the former AS Monaco man.
While the spotlight at Real Madrid will again fall on Mbappe, Tchouameni’s performance will also be under close watch.
Girona’s dynamic and intricate attacking play under Michel will provide a good test of the Frenchman’s current form and mental state, as his place in the team continues to be questioned.
