Liverpool were interested in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that his side may have to cash in on a key player during the January window amid Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSRs) concerns.

That should grab the attention of Liverpool, who were heavily linked with a move for winger Anthony Gordon in the summer window. The Reds actually reached a £75 million agreement with Newcastle to sign Gordon, with Joe Gomez going to the other way for £45 million.

But the Magpies pulled the plug on the deal. He went on to sign a new contract at St James’ Park, and has continued to impress with his performances at the club this season.

That dealt a blow to Liverpool’s hopes of reigniting any deal in January. But Howe’s latest comments may have just opened up the possibility again.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League clash against Brentford, he said: "The days when teams don't sell big players are gone.

"I think our revenue streams aren't where we want them to be. We're still trying to grow them, so I think trading in and out is going to be essential.

"Hopefully it's not going to be players that we're forced to sell, but you can't guarantee anything. The issue with PSR and our position is that nothing is clear-cut. Nothing is absolutely fixed - there will be lots of twists and turns during January. But we want to try and improve the squad."

Gordon is not the only Newcastle player that Liverpool have been linked with an interest in ahead of the January window. There has been murmurs that Alexander Isak, who scored the opening goal of Wednesday night’s 3-3 draw, could also be on their radar, although Liverpool are likely to face competition from Arsenal among others.
