There's no doubt that Alexis Mac Allister is one of Liverpool's most important players, but the Reds will have to do without the Argentine against Everton.
Mac Allister received a soft booking after a collision with Fabian Schar in Wednesday's draw at Newcastle, which gave him five yellow cards for the season in the Premier League and earned him an automatic one-match ban.
The midfielder is the first Liverpool player to pick up five Premier League bookings this term, with Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch both currently on four, and Arne Slot will be forced to shuffle his pack at Goodison Park.
Liverpool simply can't afford to rest Gravenberch given how important he is to the way the team plays, so he will no doubt start against Everton.
The Dutchman is used to having Mac Allister as the closest midfield teammate to him on the pitch, but against Everton he will likely have Curtis Jones there instead, with Dominik Szoboszlai the most advanced of the Reds' three midfielders.
Jones has been excellent for Liverpool this season and arguably produced his best-ever performance for the club in one of the few games Mac Allister hasn't started in under Slot.
The Argentine was managing a thigh issue when Chelsea visited Anfield in October and Jones took his place in the team, delivering a match-winning performance as he scored and assisted in a 2-1 win for the Reds. After 81 minutes, Jones was brought off with Mac Allister coming on in his place.
It feels as though Jones is Liverpool's most similar midfielder to Mac Allister and it is logical to think that Slot will turn to the Merseysider in the former Brighton man's absence in today's game.
Jones may well have been in line to keep his place in the team anyway given he scored against Newcastle and has generally been really good this season, but Mac Allister's suspension surely seals the deal.
