Arsenal and Manchester City have reportedly suffered a blow in their pursuit of highly rated Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. As reported by Football Insider, the Eagles are desperate to hold onto their priced asset as they struggle at the wrong end of the table.
Wharton made an immediate impact at Selhurst Park following his reported £22 million switch from Blackburn Rovers in January 2024. The tenacious midfielder became a key player under Oliver Glasner and his good form was rewarded in an England call-up.
The 20-year-old was part of the England side that finished runners-up in the UEFA European Championship 2024 in the summer. Big Premier League clubs have been named as admirers of the defensive midfielder in recent months.
Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for Wharton in January as they look to cope with Rodri's season-ending injury. Meanwhile, he is also wanted by Arsenal who are looking for replacements for ageing stars like Jorginho and Thomas Partey.
However, Crystal Palace are reportedly unlikely to entertain any offer for the midfielder amid their relegation battle. The Eagles find themselves in the 17th position in the table with just 12 points after 14 games with just a three-point cushion over Ipswich Town.
Wharton has made 10 appearances for Crystal Palace this season before suffering a groin injury in early November. He has so far made 26 appearances for the south London side having contributed with four assists.
Former Manchester City star wanted by Arsenal set to be available for free
Former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane could reportedly be available on a free transfer in the summer. As reported by Sky Sports, Bayern Munich's contract negotiations with the 28-year-old have stalled.
Sane, who has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United, has his current deal at the Allianz Arena expiring in June 2025. Bayern Munich are ready to offer the winger an extension but on lower wages.
It has been claimed that the Bavarian giants want Sane to sign a deal that will be heavily performance-related. The final decision will, however, be made by March at the latest.
However, the report claims that the Arsenal and Manchester United target won't be for sale in January. Sane previously had a successful spell in the Premier League with Manchester City between 2016 and 2020.
The former Schalke star won eight trophies at the Etihad including two Premier League titles. He moved to Bayern Munich in 2020, scoring 51 goals and providing 50 assists in 190 appearances for the Bundesliga giants.
