Everton are likely to incur “extremely high” costs after their match against Liverpool was postponed a few hours before kick-off on Saturday, according to Keith Hackett.

Storm Darragh is wreaking havoc on Merseyside with amber weather warnings put in place by the Met Office.

As a result, the final Merseyside Derby due to take place at Goodison Park will have to be rescheduled with Saturday’s game being called off around four hours before it was set to start.

Former FIFA and Premier League referee Hackett, who also served as a general manager at the PGMOL, understands the decision to postpone Everton versus Liverpool but adds that a lot of money will be wasted due to it.

“This is a huge decision and I have no doubt that the Premier League, the Ground Commander and the Police will have discussed this in detail following the severe weather forecast and winds that have already been experienced in Wales,” Hackett told Goodison News.

“The safety of fans will have been at the forefront of this decision. The cost implications can be extremely high with a late call-off. Food preparation, police, security, Fire Brigade and Ambulance service are all in communication with each other prior to a big game.

“I can recall calling a game off at Aston Villa many years ago and being confronted by a chef who wanted to know what he should do with over a thousand steaks he had pre-prepared. I said that I would have one, medium rare.

“It was not the wisest thing to have said!

“It is unlikely that the match officials who will be in a local hotel have been involved in this call due to the potential severity of the weather forecast. The safety of players and staff is important.

“TV will now have to find another game to fill in.

“*Incidentally, those staff that at the club will be contacting all forms of media and of course be advising all the staff that are required at a Premier League event not to come in.*“

It remains to be seen when this game will be played but it seems like those at Premier League HQ will have a busy time rescheduling with other matches this weekend likely to fall victim to the weather too.
