Exclusive: Real Madrid set sights on Manchester United star who's 'the best player in the world in his position'

Manchester United have begun a new era with manager Ruben Amorim taking the Old Trafford reins in November.

The Red Devils’ form has improved somewhat, though the defeat to Arsenal showed that there’s still afair bit of work to do.

With the January transfer window now on the horizon, Man United have the opportunity to strengthen their ranks.

However, the Red Devils must also watch out for other clubs setting sights on their players, as Real Madrid have just done.

Real Madrid set sights on Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez

TBR Football understands that Real Madrid are paying close attention to Lisandro Martinez’s situation at Manchester United.

The 26-year-old joined United in 2022 from Ajax, following Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford in a deal worth over £50million.

Martinez has emerged as hugely popular player with Man United’s fans with his all-action displays in the heart of their defence.

Madrid are in the market for a new central defender in 2025 and have already been casting their eyes towards the Premier League.

Arsenal’s William Saliba and Tottenham’s Cristian Romero are both of interest to the Spanish giants.

We can now reveal that Martinez is also on Real’s radar and we understand they have been keeping tabs on him this season and he is on their shortlist of options for next year.

Martinez’s current deal at Old Trafford runs to 2027, with an option, but there are no suggestions that Man United would be looking to part company with the Argentine star.

Man United do have a long standing interest in Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, who like Martinez, is left sided.

Martinez among the world’s best defenders

Man United fans will no doubt be disappointed by news that Martinez is on Real Madrid’s wish list, though at the same it won’t be overly surprising.

The 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength at Old Trafford and is also a star for Argentina, helping them win a World Cup and back-to-back Copa Americas.

Pep Guardiola told reporters after Man United’s FA Cup win over Manchester City that Martínez “is in the top five centre-backs in the world.”

“He made the difference on this game by playing passes through our defence.”

Meanwhile, Juan Manuel Rossi, a politician from Martinez’s home town of Gualeguay, described him to Analisis Digital as “the best player in the world in his position.”

Martinez was suspended for Man United’s trip to Arsenal but should be back in the mix for the Premier League home meeting with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
