Storm Darragh may have just inadvertently given Liverpool an extra advantage in the title race - opinion

Everton vs Liverpool has been postponed on Saturday afternoon, and while that is frustrating, it may not all be bad news for Liverpool.

Indeed, while the Reds will face fixture congestion in the new year once that game is rescheduled, they now get an extra few days’ rest heading into the busy festive period.

However, perhaps more importantly for Liverpool, Everton also get a few days’ worth of extra rest too.

Why would Liverpool care about Everton’s players being rested? A quick look at the Toffees’ fixture list will tell you exactly why.

Everton’s upcoming fixtures

Everton have been given a terrible early Christmas present this year as they face both Arsenal and Chelsea in their next two matches.

However, those games now look much more winnable than they perhaps would’ve done if the Merseyside Derby went ahead.

Indeed, not only will Everton have an extra few days’ rest heading into those matches, they can also carry some confidence into the Arsenal game.

Everton head into that game off the back of a 4-0 win against Wolves, so confidence should be high at Goodison Park.

Meanwhile, with all due respect, Everton were likely to lose against Liverpool on Saturday given the two teams’ respective league positions, and that disappointment may have carried through to the Arsenal game.

How Storm Darragh has helped Liverpool

The Everton game being postponed could be a real blessing in disguise for Liverpool.

It allows the Reds to get some rest ahead of their next Premier League game against Fulham, and it also increases Everton’s chances of taking points off of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Arsenal have been tipped as title contenders as of late, but if Everton can go and cause Arsenal a problem next week, Liverpool’s chances of winning the league will only increase further.

Fixture postponements can be a serious pain in the neck, they change your schedule and they upset your rhythm, but given the context of Everton’s fixture list and the packed Christmas schedule, on this rare occasion, this match being postponed may have done Liverpool a bit of a favour.

If Everton can take points off of Arsenal next week after an extra week’s rest, Liverpool will be over the moon with how things have worked out.
