Some recent reports indicate significant changes can take place in the FC Barcelona backline in the next summer transfer window. The Blaugranes started this season with a surplus of defenders, with Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, and Eric Garcia all available for the two center-back positions.
However, Araujo and Christensen have been unavailable for almost the entirety of this season up to now, while Eric Garcia has also spent a significant time on the sidelines. Similarly, Jules Kounde has been playing as the right-back, and Cubarsi and Martinez have played almost all of the games up to now as the team’s starting center-backs.
Next summer, the Blaugranes are expected to part ways with some of these defenders, with Araujo, Christensen, and Garcia all linked with moves away from the club. On the other hand, there is another defender that Barcelona reportedly want to bring into their team, the German center-back Jonathan Tah.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender’s contract with the German team is ending at the end of this season, and he has already indicated that he is not going to renew. In such a situation, he is a highly sought player with big clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid all being linked with him.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Bayer Leverkusen coach, Xabi Alonso, also admitted in a recent presser to the uncertain future of Tah at his club and also praised him for his attitude:
“I’m not worried about that right now. We’re happy to have him with us this season. His attitude is excellent, and he has a huge impact on our game. We need him until the very last day. Then we’ll see what happens in the future. For me, the summer is still too far away to think about.”
A recent report indicated that his agent has already reached an agreement in principle with Barcelona to join them next summer. However, it is yet to be confirmed, and it remains to be seen where the €30m-rated German defender will be playing next season.
