Graham Smyth has blasted Sky Sports for their coverage of the Leeds United game against Derby County after Curtis Davies was asked about ‘spygate’.

The two sides met in the Championship on Saturday [7 December] as Daniel Farke’s side were looking to return to winning ways amid their battle for promotion to the Premier League.

Ahead of the game between the two sides, the former Rams defender was asked about the time when Marcelo Bielsa sent a spy to the Derby camp ahead of a game between the two sides in 2019.

However, Smyth felt this was poor coverage of the game as he posted on X: “I know the broadcaster has to try and hype the game but spygate stuff feels so, so forced now. A mad thing that happened but zero relevance for today’s fixture. Two teams unrecognisable since then.”

The Whites have had a great season so far and continue to compete at the top end of the Championship table, battling away for the top spot.

After a 1-0 defeat against Blackburn Rovers last weekend, Farke’s side came into this one hoping they could get back to winning ways and build some momentum ahead of a busy run of games in December.

Therefore, you can understand Smyth’s frustration when it comes to the coverage of this game on Sky Sports as they took the conversation away from the football and rather focused on something that happened five years ago under a different manager.

Even though both teams have changed in the years since this event, there remains a bit of a rivalry between the two sides and that is one that certainly doesn’t need any previous events to fire it up inside the supporters.

Nevertheless, the Whites will no doubt feel less aggrieved by this after they beat the Rams 2-0 to return to the top of the Championship.
