Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle United were a ‘mess’ in the second half against Brentford on Saturday.
After Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool, the hope was that the Magpies had turned a corner. Newcastle’s intensity was back, while Eddie Howe had found a way to get the most out of his star players.
But any momentum that was built up from that game had vanished by the time Newcastle United arrived at the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford.
The Magpies lost 4-2 away from home, with Alan Shearer calling Newcastle ‘hopeless’ defensively. That is putting it lightly, as Eddie Howe’s side waste the chance to move back into the top half of the Premier League.
Newcastle were not bad in the first half, but the second 45 minutes was laughable. They never looked like getting back into the game after Nathan Collins’ goal.
The Toon fans who battled the elements to travel to the capital deserved much better, and they were let down by their team.

Bruno Guimaraes’ honest assessment as Newcastle lose to Brentford
The second half was unacceptable, while Bruno Guimaraes was not enamoured with how they started the game either.
The Newcastle United captain has given a very honest verdict on his side’s performance, bemoaning the way they have been starting games. In the eyes of Bruno, Newcastle were a mess.
MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES
“Very disappointing,” he told Premier League Productions.
“In the first half we had some very good moments, but after the third goal we lost our way, we lost control.
“We have always been reactive, we need to concede a goal to score. We never score first, we concede a lot of goals, this cannot happen. We have to find a way to be consistent.
“We had to change in the first half to get into the game. But after we conceded the third we became a mess, we gave the ball away a lot and we were punished. I want to thank the fans coming in not good weather, now we have a week to try and recover and beat Leicester at home.
“We have to turn things around. Last season we had one of the best defences in the league, now we concede a lot. This is about the whole team, we have to find a way not to concede.”
Unacceptable performance from Newcastle United
I think Bruno has summed it up very well. You have to admire his honesty – the captain is not shirking away from what an absolute mess that became.
As he says, Newcastle have become too reactive. They have now won just two of their last 11 Premier League games, while they have conceded the first goal in nine of their 14 Premier League games this season.
This is a team that wants to be back in the Champions League, but right now that is pure fantasy.
Bruno has made it clear that Newcastle need to turn things around, but it is unclear what the solution is.
There is no consistency to the Magpies’ performances. They only seem able to do one side of the game. Before the previous two matches, our attack was criticised. Now goals are not an issue, but keeping them out at the other end is.
Newcastle have conceded seven goals in two games, and a lot of them were completely avoidable. Individual mistakes are costing Eddie Howe, who is under pressure to turn this around.
