Peterborough United are “disappointed” at having to play Everton in the FA Cup Third Round on a Thursday.

The League One outfit released a statement [6 December] regarding the Football Association’s decision to schedule the game between the Toffees and the Posh at Goodison on 9 January.

Peterborough feel their supporters are being neglected, writing: “We were very confident of taking a full allocation of tickets for our ever first visit to Goodison Park and what is the final ever third round tie there.

“On learning that the tie will take place on Thursday, 9 January 2025, we are incredibly disappointed that the needs of our supporters have not been taken into consideration in this decision.

“Although we have an appreciation that Liverpool and Everton are unable to play on the same day and with Liverpool also drawn at home, it was unlikely the game would take place on Saturday; we feel a better solution could have been found to ensure all our supporters who wish to travel to the game would have been able to do so.”

The Blues have had to cancel the Merseyside derby on 7 December due to Storm Darragh, and it remains to be seen when the Liverpool clash will take place.

Peterborough rightfully aggrieved by Everton development

A trip to a Premier League side is a massive moment for a team playing in the third tier of English football.

The Posh supporters will surely be making their way to Merseyside in large numbers, but the game being set on a weekday poses problems for them.

Whatever the reason may be, the FA and stakeholders need to ensure that supporters of clubs playing in the lower leagues aren’t forgotten about when making decisions.

Everton are playing their final season at Goodison Park, and it will be a momentous occasion for the Peterborough faithful to make their way to Merseyside.

It could also be a chance for the Posh to pull off a massive upset away from home, with Sean Dyche struggling to bring the best out of the squad at his disposal.

The English manager has the Toffees lurking around the relegation zone, with some bland football on display for the Blues fans.

With the Liverpool game now postponed, Dyche still has some tough challenges ahead in Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Dan Friedkin will arguably have to evaluate the 53-year-old head coach’s future if he’s still in charge once the takeover is complete.
