Newcastle dealt blow in pursuit of £66m-rated Arsenal, Chelsea striker target

Newcastle United have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Arsenal and Chelsea attacking target Viktor Gyokeres.

Newcastle United are looking to reinforce their attack and they are interested in the services of Viktor Gyokeres. But, according to a report from Football Insider, the Magpies have suffered a blow in their pursuit of the Swedish international as their financial situation has restricted their ability to spend in the upcoming transfer window.

Gyokeres has become one of the most sought-after players in world football thanks to his exceptional form in front of goal in recent seasons. An impressive campaign with Coventry City helped him secure a move to Sporting CP in the summer of 2022 and he hasn’t looked back since.

The move to Portugal has helped him take his game to the next level. The 26-year-old has been scoring goals for fun over the last 18 months. He has a total of 68 goals and 19 assists in his 72 outings. Having scored 25 goals in his 22 outings multiple top clubs have taken note of his performance and they are considering luring him away from Sporting.

Newcastle unlikely to win race for Gyokeres

Newcastle are one of the clubs that are quite impressed with the 26-year-old’s consistency. Eddie Howe seeks more firepower in the final third of the pitch and they feel the arrival of Gyokeres could help them fulfil their ambitions.

While the Magpies can trigger his £66 million release clause to add him to their squad mid-season, the report suggests they will struggle to get a deal over the line. They do not have the best financial situation and their ability to spend has been restricted because of profit and sustainability rules.

The only way the Tyneside club can afford a deal to sign the Swedish sensation in January is by selling him fellow countryman Alexander Isak for a massive fee. Newcastle’s desire is to tie the 25-year-old down to a new long-term deal and there is no way they are letting Isak leave mid-season.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also keen on Gyokeres

As a result, Gyokeres to Newcastle looks next to impossible. Meanwhile, there is interest in his services from Arsenal as well as Chelsea. The Gunners seek a proven goal scorer and the former Coventry star could surely have quite a few problems for them.

While the Blues’ attack has been doing wonders for them this season, Enzo Maresca still seeks more firepower and they are interested in adding the Sporting ace to their squad. Both giants are keen on his signature but they are reluctant to meet his £66 million release clause making a mid-season move very unlikely.
