Any notion of a honeymoon period for Ruben Amorim as Manchester United head coach was well and truly put to bed on Saturday as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.
Amorim had been hoping to bounce back following the midweek loss at Arsenal, and although they dominated for much of the game at Old Trafford, Forest clinched a first away league win against United in 30 years.
The hosts were behind with just 91 seconds played as Nikola Milenkovic headed in from a corner – it was the seventh goal United had conceded from corners in the Premier League this season, the joint most of anyone in the division.
Rasmus Højlund equalised when Matz Sels could only parry Alejandro Garnacho’s effort, but Forest were back in front early in the second half.
Morgan Gibbs-White was afforded space 25 yards from goal and his low drive down the middle of the goal seemed to deceive André Onana, who watched the ball fizz by him.
A looping Chris Wood header – making him Forest’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer with 25 – was then bizarrely allowed to go in by Lisandro Martínez, who presumably thought the ball was going wide.
Bruno Fernandes did pull one back with a fine finish from just outside the area after Amad Diallo’s cut-back, but there was to be no dramatic late turnaround from United.
It means Amorim suffered consecutive top-flight league defeats for only the second time in his career, while Nuno Espírito Santo became the first Forest manager since 1909-10 to win both of his first two league games against Man Utd.
Things don’t get much easier for Amorim and United, with a trip to Manchester City up next in the Premier League a week on Sunday.
