Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi has shed light on the events that led to his departure from the Emirates Stadium in August 2019, following the club’s record-breaking £72 million signing of Nicolas Pepe from Lille.
Iwobi, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, spent 15 years at the club, rising through the ranks alongside future stars like Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe. Despite making 149 senior appearances and contributing 15 goals and 24 assists, the Nigeria international’s time at Arsenal came to an end on Deadline Day in 2019 when Everton secured his services for £28 million, plus up to £7 million in add-ons.
Speaking onThe Beautiful Game Podcast, Iwobi explained how Arsenal framed the decision to sell him. “Arsenal had just signed a new winger [Pepe], and there were players who weren’t ready to leave.

“They told me, ‘We’ve received a high bid for you, and we’re unlikely to get this sort of money elsewhere. It’s up to you.’ It felt like a nudge, especially with Pepe being someone likely to play in my position,” Iwobi said.

Since his move to Craven Cottage, Iwobi has rediscovered his form under Silva’s management. Now in his second season with Fulham, he has become a key player, delivering crucial performances. Before Fulham’s recent 3-1 victory over Brighton, Iwobi had six goal contributions this season, a tally that grew with his stunning brace against the Seagulls on Thursday night.
Iwobi’s departure was bittersweet. While he left for a significant new opportunity, his roots in Arsenal’s Hale End academy and his time with the senior team remain pivotal chapters in his career. “It was tough leaving a club I had been with for so long, but I felt ready for a fresh start,” Iwobi shared.
