Report: Manchester United now lead Chelsea in race to sign Premier League teenager likened to Cole Palmer

Manchester United have added a number of top talents since Ineos took the reins at Old Trafford and we can expect that to continue into 2025 and beyond.

Ineos backed Erik ten Hag rather than sacked him over the summer and bolstered his Manchester United squad.

United spent over £180million on new signings over the summer but Ten Hag still lost his job in October after a poor start to the season.

Away from the big-money additions, United also placed a keen focus on adding talent for the future.

Chido Obi-Martin was United’s major coup, snatching the striker away from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

James Overy and Samuel Lusale arrived too with United looking to add potential superstars of the future.

Manchester United lead race for Chelsea target

American talent Nimfasha Berchimas is set to join United on trial but a Premier League raid may also be in the plans.

Reports earlier in the weekend suggested that United had scouted Southampton’s Tyler Dibling on multiple occasions.

The Mirror (08/12, p65) now claim that United are actually leading the race to sign Dibling in 2025.

It’s suggested that Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are both interested in signing Dibling having been impressed so far this season.

United ‘lead the way’ though and are favourites to snatch Dibling away from the Saints.

The report claims that Dan Ashworth wanted to bring Dibling to Newcastle United, but he chose to stay with Southampton.

Ashworth is now sporting director at United and wants to finally sign the winger having seen him make a Premier League impact.

Jason Wilcox key to Tyler Dibling pursuit

Ashworth is certainly a fan but the key man behind United’s pursuit may in fact be Jason Wilcox.

Technical director Wilcox was at Southampton last season and will be well aware of Dibling’s talent and potential.

Wilcox even pushed for Dibling to play first-team games last season but Saints boss Russell Martin didn’t feel he was ready.

It’s therefore no surprise that Wilcox and United are interested after Dibling broke into Martin’s Southampton plans.

Dibling has already started nine Premier League games this season despite being just 18, and United fans may remember that he rather masterfully won a penalty against Diogo Dalot earlier in the campaign.

Former United man Dion Dublin has likened Dibling’s style to that of Cole Palmer whilst speaking to BBC Sport and excitement is building around the teenager.

Dibling has already had one spell with Chelsea in his youth though and United will hope to convince him that Old Trafford is the best destination for him – especially with Wilcox at the club.
