‘Dreadful’ - Alan Shearer sends ‘attitude’ warning to several Newcastle stars after Brentford…

Inconsistency continues to be an alarming problem for Newcastle United after suffering defeat to Brentford.

It is becoming an alarming trend this season that Newcastle United only show up for the big Premier League clashes.

Newcastle were excellent in the 3-3 draw to Liverpool and arguably deserved more against the league leaders.

But supporters have been here before and refused to get carried away. The Liverpool performance needed to be a platform for a strong run of form, but Newcastle fell at the first hurdle with a ‘hopeless’ 4-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.

Eddie Howe believes Newcastle players will ‘cringe’ at their display against Brentford, and Alan Shearer was also far from impressed with what he saw.

Alan Shearer issues warning to Newcastle United squad

Newcastle have beaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham this season while picking up draws against Manchester City and Liverpool.

However, Newcastle appear to struggle whenever they do not have an underdog label attached to them. That was the case once again on Saturday and Shearer has now issued a warning to Newcastle players.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Shearer said: “I don’t like the attitude of several of the Newcastle players.

“You can’t just turn up in the big home games. They drew with Liverpool, they drew with City. They beat Spurs, they beat Chelsea, they beat Arsenal.

“This is exactly what I mean, they were dreadful defensively.”

Eddie Howe also questioned Newcastle United ‘attitude’

Newcastle have proven they can go toe-to-toe with the best sides in the country, so it is not a question of talent.

There is a clear lack of energy, intensity and fight in games whenever Newcastle are considered the favourites and that is something Howe will have to urgently address.

After the full-time whistle, Howe appeared to question Newcastle’s attitude, suggesting they weren’t “strong enough” mentally.

Howe said: “The attitude from the players was that there was a willingness to win and a willingness to fight but I don’t think it was strong enough.

“I’ve got to be careful because goals always change emotions for people on the outside but also for the players who are playing.”
