UWCL matches on MD 5 Wednesday

The first four matches are played on Wednesday the 11th of December, starting at 17:45 GMT. This is when VfL Wolfsburg and AS Roma face off, all the other teams on Wednesday either have a ticket or are eliminated.

Galatasaray vs Olympique Lyon

Olympique Lyon secured their ticket to the next round with four wins in the Women’s Champions League so far. Their opponent is Galatasaray, the Türkish club is at the bottom of the table with 0 points and is eliminated from the next round. The outcome of this match might not matter for the group, but it’s a great learning opportunity for both sides.

VfL Wolfsburg vs AS Roma

The game between VfL Wolfsburg and AS Roma is a must watch. Both teams have six points and can still go through to the next round. VfL Wolfsburg only takes second place due to their goal difference (+7). The clubs faced off early October and it was AS Roma that took the three points. They only won by 1-0 after they were awarded a penalty. If you look at the statistics it was VfL Wolfsburg that dominated the game.

Roma will be through to the quarter-finals if they beat Wolfsburg. They will be unable to reach the quarter-finals if they lose by two goals or more.

Chelsea vs FC Twente

At 20:00 GMT Chelsea vs FC Twente kicks-off. The Dutch club debuted in this format of the Women’s Champions League and managed a great start of the competition with a win over Celtic. The other games were unfortunately lost, so they cannot go through to the knockouts. Chelsea secured four wins, just like Lyon and City, and earned their ticket on MD 4.

Celtic vs Real Madrid

Celtic was also a debutant in the Women’s Champions League this season. Elena Sadiku and her team gave their all in order to compete with the best teams in Europe. Unfortunately, they lost all matches. On matchday 5 they host Real Madrid, and it would be a great opportunity for them to learn and improve, really building towards the future.

UWCL MD 5 Games on Thursday

The UWCL matches continue Thursday the 12th of December. Kick-offs are at 17:45 GMT and 20:00 GMT. The most important match here is Hammarby vs FC Barcelona.

FC Bayern Munich vs Juventus

Juventus visits FC Bayern Munich this round. The German club had a lot of trouble with Vålerenga away on the previous matchday. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after Damnjanović opened the score in the 75th minute but Elise Thorsnes equalized before full time. Even though Bayern qualified, they have not secured the first place yet so a win against Juventus is a must. The Italian club won from Vålerenga but could not continue this successful start, losing all the other games. Juvenus cannot go through to the next round.

Vålerenga vs Arsenal

The Norwegian club hosts Arsenal this round. Their successful match against Bayern might give them the confidence to do the same against the Arsenal. The 1-1 draw only gave them 1 point but it stopped Bayern’s winning streak. The Gunners have qualified but are looking for a win to possibly take over first place. The previous meeting between these two ended in 4-1 for Arsenal.

Hammarby vs FC Barcelona

Hammarby hosts FC Barcelona on amtchday 5. The Swedish club managed one win in their Women’s Champions League campaign, against St. Pölten. It’s their negative goal difference (-10) that does not allow them a real chance for a ticket to the next round.

FC Barcelona is through to the quarter-finals if they avoid defeat by nine goals or more. The Spanish club takes second place if they do not beat Hammarby and City win or if they lose and City avoid defeat.

Hammarby needs to win by nine goals or more if they still want a shot at the quarter-finals.

Manchester City vs St. Pölten

The away match in Austria was a joy to watch. Manchester City managed a 2-3 win but could not hold onto their lead the whole game. It was Alana Kennedy that opened the score in the 5th minute but by half time Brunnthaler equalizer. As soon as the teams got back on the pitch, St. Pölten took their chance and scored the 2-1 (Dubcová). City fought their way back to 2-2 four minutes later when Fujino found the back of the net. Even though the English club had 72% possession, 4 big chances and 17 total shots, it took Fowler until the last ten minutes to score the 2-3. St. Pölten unfortunately has 0 points and cannot go through to the next round.
