Newcastle United endured another miserable weekend.
Indeed, only days after a hugely impressive 3-3 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool, Newcastle shot themselves in the foot once again.
Now, the fact Brentford boast the best home record in the division should be taken into account. Clearly, a trip to the Gtech Community Stadium is never likely to be easy.
Teams can, have and will lose there.
Still, the manner of the defeat is what was so concerning. Eddie Howe’s side defended awfully even after getting themselves back into the game and the fallout has been equally as worrying.
Alan Shearer labelled them “hopeless”, while the Newcastle United manager admitted his side would “cringe” when watching their defending back.
Bruno Guimaraes slammed the display as a “mess” and Howe himself even questioned the attitude of some of his players.
It’s all well and good raising your game when the big teams come to St James’ Park but it feels pointless when the same attitude isn’t taken into every single game. No one expects to win every week but to see such different levels of performances is painful to watch.
Howe has a lot of work to do and admitted he would wait until the storm has passed on the Brentford game to discuss it with his players.

Eddie Howe now hints at imminent Newcastle talks
According to The Chronicle, Howe will hold an inquest with his players on Monday. Howe himself admits it’s better to wait until the emotions have died down somewhat, otherwise he might say something he could go on to regret.
“In my experience you can make a lot of mistakes when you speak to players after a game. You can say a lot of things you regret, on your own emotion,” he told the outlet.
“So I try to keep my conversations very short. Certainly when I reflect they will be very long. Because we have to give the information where we think we went wrong and we have to put it right.”
The very latest on Eddie Howe’s future as Newcastle manager
Whatever happens in those talks on Monday, it seems Howe will not be going anywhere.
The Daily Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, after all, responded to a supporter suggesting the manager should leave on Saturday by confirming Howe wasn’t in line to depart.
It seems he will be backed despite a hugely inconsistent season. Now, it’s time to try and turn things around…
