Tottenham vs Chelsea–Match preview and team news

Tottenham entertain Chelsea in North London this Sunday in a game that rarely fails to deliver drama.

The Lilywhites will be desperate to conquer their London rivals after a flat performance on the South Coast during the week.

Spurs’ injury woes were compounded during the week when Ben Davies was forced off against Bournemouth with a hamstring issue. He joins an extensive list of absentees which include Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert. However, Cristian Romero may be able to feature after a month out with a toe injury.

Chelsea are in a rich vein of form having put five past a despondent Southampton on Wednesday night.

The last time Chelsea visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium they played out a thrilling encounter with the Lilywhites and prevailed 4-1 in N17.

Spurs were top of the Premier League at the time, but after going down to nine men and seeing James Maddison and Micky van de Ven go off injured they were left with an impossible task.

For Chelsea, Mykhailo Mudryk missed the game in midweek through illness while Reece James and Wesley Fofana remain out.

Tottenham vs Chelsea – Match preview and team news

Form

Tottenham: LWDDL

Frustrations continue at Tottenham Hotspur after a lethargic display away to Bournemouth on Thursday night.

A Dean Huijsen header deservedly won the game for the Cherries, who could have easily won by three of four on the night.

That result means they have only won once in their last six games, that 4-0 rout away to Manchester City. Ange Postecoglou is struggling to cope with their injury crisis and after hostility came from the away end at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday, Postecoglou is under pressure.

Chelsea: DWWWW

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are flying high in second place and have emerged as potential title contenders this campaign.

The Blues dominated Southampton on Wednesday evening as they scored five past the Saints with five different goalscorers.

Chelsea have scored the joint-most goals in the Premier League this term with 31 including 10 in their last three league outings.

In the league, they are on a six-match unbeaten run, which includes a comprehensive victory over Aston Villa last weekend.

Last Meeting: Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham, Premier League, 2nd May 2024

Spurs were no match for Chelsea back in May, as the Blues eased past their London rivals at Stamford Bridge.

The hosts flew out of the traps and almost scored in the opening five minutes of the contest.

Nicolas Jackson’s effort took a nick of Guglielmo Vicario before travelling goalward, but Micky van de Ven used his lightning pace to clear off the line.

Chelsea academy graduate Trevoh Chalobah headed his side in front midway through the first period as he gracefully met Cole Palmer’s free-kick.

Mykhailo Mudryk almost curled in Chelsea’s second but his strike whistled just wide of the post before Cristian Romero’s header at the other end missed the target by a couple of inches.

The Blues doubled the deficit after the interval with a moment of indecision in the Spurs backline punished. Palmer rattled the crossbar with a free-kick and Heung-min Son and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg got in each other’s way to allow Jackson to nod into an empty net. The full-time whistle blew with Mauricio Pochettino getting one over his former employers.
