Liverpool fans braced for Premier League title race hiccup as Chelsea reality emerges

Just a week on from going nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, Liverpool could be about to see its lead cut by more than half through no fault of its own.

The Reds did suffer a setback in midweek after being held to a 3-3 draw at Newcastle, which enabled Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City to make up some ground in the title race. Given the Gunners and City have both failed to take maximum points from St James’ Park though, that could still prove to be an important point come the end of the season.

Liverpool though can only watch on now as its lead faces being eaten into further following the postponement of yesterday’s Merseyside derby. Having been nine points clear just seven days ago, Arne Slot’s advantage could be four points by the end of play today.

City were unable to take full advantage on Saturday after being held to a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace. Pep Guardiola’s side is now eight points off the pace, having of course played a game extra.

Chelsea and Arsenal though will have the chance to narrow the gap on Sunday, with both side making short journeys to face fellow London sides.

The Gunners, who sit third on goal difference, travel to Fulham, with Marco Silva’s side posing a threat amid what has been an impressive season so far. Mikel Arteta’s side has returned to form in recent weeks though following the return of some key players, most notably Martin Odegaard, so Liverpool won’t be anticipating any favors here.

And nor will they be expecting any help in the other big game today as Chelsea head to Tottenham. The Blues are currently the Reds’ closest challengers, and with Enzo Maresca’s side growing in stature as the season progresses, they’ll have every reason to believe they’ll move closer to Liverpool today – not least because of their recent record against Spurs.

Chelsea has won seven of its last nine meetings with Tottenham in all competitions, and with fans’ patience seemingly starting to run thin in north London after Spurs’ defeat to Bournemouth during the week, it could be the perfect time for the Blues to pay them a visit.

It certainly isn’t anything for Liverpool fans to get particularly worried about – after all, a four-point lead is still a healthy advantage, especially with a game still in hand. The pressure will be on the Reds to ensure they make that extra game – whenever it arrives – count though, and Chelsea and Arsenal can turn the heat up a little more today.
