Alan Shearer weighs in on Mohamed Salah contract saga with'impossible'warning to Liverpool

Alan Shearer has warned Mohamed Salah that his contract demands could put Liverpool in "an impossible situation". The former England captain dismissed the notion of the Egyptian forward simply naming his price amidst ongoing speculation about his future.

Salah, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is free to negotiate with clubs outside England for a potential free transfer next summer when the transfer window opens on January 1.

Following his brace in Liverpool's 3-2 victory over Southampton last month, Salah revealed that he hasn't been formally offered an extension by the club he's netted 226 goals for since his move from Roma in 2017.

Mohamed Salah and Liverpool finally reach compromise over contract to end saga

Premier League's all-time leading scorer Shearer believes the contract stalemate isn't as straightforward as it seems, suggesting that any increase in Salah's salary could trigger further issues at Anfield. Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, Shearer said: "When I hear people say just give him what he wants, in terms of the Salah situation, you can't just give a player what he wants.

"One, you don't know what he's asking for, because he might put the club in an impossible situation if you give him what he wants, then someone else wants to know what he's being paid. Then the next big hitter that comes in will want and demand what he's being paid. There has to be a balance to something.

"We don't know what goal bonus Salah is on, so it's a very complicated situation when you're talking about contracts for players who are in their 30s, but have been a huge part of the football club."

Liverpool are back in the thick of it with a Champions League trip to Girona on Tuesday night, followed by a Premier League clash at home against Fulham on Saturday.
