Dan Ashworth has sensationally left Manchester United with immediate effect - just five months after leaving Newcastle United.

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe fiercely chased the former Newcastle United sporting director. A five-month saga resulted in the Red Devils reportedly being quoted £20million to cut him from his Toon contract early, although the final fee was undisclosed.

Ashworth was placed on gardening leave by Newcastle until a compensation package was agreed. When the deal finally materialised in June, he was tasked, alongside technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada, with leading a new era at Man United.

However, just five months into his tenure, he is already heading for the exit. A brief club statement read: “Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as sporting director of Manchester United by mutual agreement. We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future.”

It is being reported that the 53-year-old has reservations about Ruben Amorim’s appointment due to his 3-4-3 style. Just days ago, Eddie Howe told the Red Devils they had hired a gem in Ashworth.

“He is a good problem-solver and will work his way through things from a structural viewpoint and then rebuild them. I got on really well with him, got on well with him and I was sad to see him go. But I also understood his viewpoint and wish him well.”

Man United are now facing fresh embarrassment following Ashworth’s shock exit. It also puts his career at a crossroads, with the ex-Toon chief bailing on an ambitious project at St James’ Park only to leave less than six months later.
