Sir Jim Ratcliffe's positive prediction for Dan Ashworth has backfired after the sporting director's exit at Manchester United
Manchester United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe's prediction that Dan Ashworth would be "a very good addition" to the club came back to bite him after his exit following just five months in the role.
Ashworth's departure was confirmed on Sunday morning after United announced a "mutual agreement" to part ways, despite reports that officials had instigated the move.
The 53-year-old had only arrived in July after being put on gardening leave by Newcastle United. It is believed his transition at Old Trafford was "not smooth", according to the Athletic, with his role not working within Ratcliffe's hierarchy.
It comes despite United chasing Ashworth at the start of the year and having extensive talks with Newcastle. The Red Devils ended up paying the Magpies £3million in compensation and Ratcliffe was thought to be leading the efforts to hire him.

In February, when United were in talks to bring Ashworth to Old Trafford, Ratcliffe waxed lyrical about him, predicting big things and calling him "one of the best sporting directors in the world ".
"Dan Ashworth is clearly one of the top sporting directors in the world," he said. "I have no doubt he is a very capable person.
"He is interested in Manchester United because it’s the biggest challenge at the biggest club in the world. It would be different at City because you’re maintaining a level. Here it’s a significant rebuilding job. He would be a very good addition."

Ratcliffe's former bright outlook for Ashworth came before the British billionaire was said to be pivotal in the decision to part ways with him.
United have now been left with a hole in their hierarchy just weeks before the January transfer window, where they are expected to be active to bring in new reinforcements for new boss Ruben Amorim.
Confirming Ashworth's exit on Sunday, United released a brief 41-word statement thanking him for his work during his short time at the club.
"Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement," it said. "We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future."
