Michail Antonio spent 45 minutes trapped inside his Ferrari after crashing into a tree in Epping Forest, Essex.
The West Ham United striker had to be cut out of his vehicle at the scene of the crash by firefighters, with the operation lasting just under an hour.
Antonio was subsequently rushed to hospital and while he was confirmed to be in a stable condition on Saturday night, the full extent of his injuries isn’t yet known.
It’s reported by The Daily Mail that sources suggest he might’ve suffered injuries to both of his legs, as well as a potentially damaged femur.
Photographs shared on social media show extensive damage sustained to the driver’s side of the car, with chunks of the front right-hand wing including the wheel, not attached to the main chassis.
Witnesses have spoke of their horror after seeing the devastation left behind by the crash, with one onlooker telling The Sun: “There were other cars stopped and people were on their phones calling 999.
“It was awful weather, rain, wind and very slippery on the road. It didn’t look like another car was involved. It looked like it had spun out of control.
“I only found out later who he was. I hope he’s OK.”
Another added: “The right wing [of the car] was ripped off, as well as the right front wheel and driver’s door.
“I could see firefighters had to cut away parts of the car to get him out.”
As he begins his recovery following the incident, it’s expected the Jamaican international will be out of Premier League action for some time.
A statement from West Ham released on Saturday evening read: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area.
“Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.
“At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.
“The Club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course.”
Antonio has netted one goal and provided one assist in 14 league matches for the Hammers this season.
The capital club are back in action tomorrow evening when they welcome fellow strugglers Wolves to the London Stadium.
