West Ham have given a fresh update on Michail Antonio's status following the forward's shocking car crash over the weekend. The entire football community was left in shock when it emerged Antonio had been involved in a horrendous collision, with his smashed Ferrari found in a wooded area near Theydon Bois, Essex, sparking concern.
West Ham later announced that the player was "stable" and responsive after the accident. The latest from the club offers up more details on his condition.
A fresh statement read: "West Ham can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon. Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days."
"Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and is thankful for the tremendous support received from the wider football community ever since news broke, as well as expressing deep appreciation to the emergency services and first responders who cared for Michail immediately after the incident, and the healthcare professionals aiding him throughout his rehabilitation. The club will provide further updates when appropriate."
In earlier comments about the 34-year-old, the Hammers said: "West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident in the Essex area," as per reports from The Mirror.
"Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital. At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family."
The Premier League also expressed support for Antonio, by stating: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Premier League are also with Antonio, his family friends and all at West Ham."
Gary Lineker also paused Match of the Day on Saturday night to send a heartfelt message to Antonio.
