West Ham player Michail Antonio undergoes surgery as club issues statement

West Ham striker Michail Antonio has undergone surgery following a road traffic accident, the club has said. They released a statement on X.

They said: "West Ham United can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon. Michail will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days.

"Everyone at the Club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery. The Club will provide further updates when appropriate."

The striker was involved in a road traffic accident on Saturday, December 7. According to EssexLive, the incident took place somewhere in Essex.

Photos seen by MyLondon show a badly damaged silver Ferrari on the side of a road. However, it is unconfirmed whether or not this was Michail Antonio's car.

Michail Antonio joined West Ham in 2015, and has since made 268 appearances for the East London club. He's also played for Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Reading, and Tooting and Mitcham United, with loan spells at Cheltenham Town, Southampton, and Colchester United.
