Premier League release Arsenal statment after William Salibaal

The Premier League have confirmed why William Saliba's equaliser for Arsenal against Fulham on Sunday stood.

Fulham took an early lead at Craven Cottage with their first attack of the game. Raul Jimenez got away from Jakub Kiwior before placing a shot perfectly beyond Gunners goalkeeper David Raya.

But Mikel Arteta's side hit back after Kai Havertz headed Declan Rice's corner into the path of Saliba who flicked home. There was a lengthy VAR check in west London and despite looking offside initially, the Frenchman was adjudged to be onside.

And a statement has now been released to confirm this. "The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR as Saliba was in an onside position," the official Premier League match centre account said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Arsenal will be eager to secure victory, which will put them just four points behind league leader Liverpool. However, the Gunners will have played a game more than Arne Slot's team after the Reds' Merseyside derby against Everton was called off on Saturday due to the inclement weather.

The Gunners dropped five points against Fulham last season which Arteta admits were crucial in the title race. “Unfortunately it’s not that easy,” he said when asked about gaining those points back this season. “There can be things like if you’ve not been at your best, if the opposition plays well and it can be other factors. This season that has already happened.

“We have to learn from it and make sure that you are better equipped and prepared for the next one when you have the chance to do it.”
