More heartbreak for Town as two late goals hand Bournemouth a win at Portman Road

The Blues took the lead through Conor Chaplin and had chances to grab a second, but the Cherries equalised late on through a Enes Unal before Dango Ouattara bagged the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time, handing Town their third defeat in a week.

Seconds after kick off, play had to be stopped as Sam Morsy was caught in the face by Justin Kluivert, leading to a stoppage and a dropped ball. Ipswich were quick to progress up the pitch and win a corner, which Liam Delap flashed wide after Leif Davis’ overcooked delivery was hooked back into the box.

It was Bournemouth, however, who had the first real chance, which they came inches away from scoring. Antoine Semenyo spotted the overlapping run of Milos Kerkez, who crossed low into the box for Marcus Tavernier. The wide man got a touch on the ball, but couldn’t make the right contact on it to steer it past Kepa from point-blank range.

Early yellow cards for Liam Delap and Sammie Szmodics were far from ideal, especially with the former now onto four for the campaign and one away from a suspension but Town grew into the game and started to create chances.

Omari Hutchinson set up a good one in the 19th minute, curling a cross onto the head of Burgess, who flicked the ball onto the roof of the net.

With all the new signings that the Blues made over the summer, it was two players from their League One days who linked up for the opening goal. Burgess chased down the ball after some head tennis from a long throw, cutting the ball back to Chaplin, who slotted the ball into the net to make it 1-0 in the 22nd minute.

They were hungry for more. Bournemouth managed to clear a Leif Davis corner as far as Jack Taylor, whose strike from outside the area bounced off Adam Smith forced Kepa into a good save in the 26th minute. Szmodics took the resulting corner, which Burgess nodded in, but VAR ruled it out as Delap held the Cherries’ goalkeeper.

Chaos ensued. Seconds later, Marcus Tavernier hit the post with a low shot up the other end of the pitch. VAR was used once again to check a potential foul on Justin Kluivert, but referee Michael Salisbury was advised not to award a penalty. Andoni Iraola’s irate response saw him given a yellow card after that.

A slip from Morsy in midfield allowed Bournemouth to break with two players. Evanilson played the ball to Kluivert, who was sent clean through on goal, but Burgess got back at the last second to make a vital last-ditch block.

That was really the story of the first half. Ipswich showed their moment of quality to get ahead, but it was their defensive work that stood out in an end-to-end clash at Portman Road.

Both sides tested each other with threatening attacks at the start of the first half. Delap had a chance to run at Bournemouth's back line, but cut tthe ball into the path of Ilia Zabarnyi. The Cherries countered as Kluivert set up Lewis Cook, who blasted an effort well wide from outside the area.

Bournemouth began to turn the screw as the clock ticked towards the hour-mark. Delap began to tire and look sloppy on the ball while Burgess had to play on after tacking a heavy whack.

The visitors were the dominant side without really banging down the door for an equaliser. The best chance, in fact, fell the way of Ipswich, as Delap slipped Szmodics through on goal. His shot was saved from a tight angle, but the ball fell back towards the former Manchester City striker, who couldn't make contact.

They found a second wind in the latter stages, although Bournemouth looked the fresher of two sides. The Cherries made four substitutions before Town even made their first.

Ali Al-Hamadi got stuck in as soon as he was introduced in the 80th minute, winning a throw-in before waving his arms up to get the crowd going once again. He then helped set up Chaplin for a shot from the edge of the area, which bobbled just wide. Town were adamant that it was a corner, but a goal kick was given.

They kept pushing. Jack Taylor's powerful long-range drive was blocked in the 87th minute before Chaplin curled a low effort wide.

As is so often the case, you'll be punished if you don't take your chances in the Premier League, which is what happened in the 87th minute as Dango Ouattara picked up the ball down the left and lifted it over Arijanet Muric. Substitute Enes Unal put pressure on Burgess, who could only tap the ball into the net for an own-goal, making it 1-1.

Bournemouth then struck again - a late sickener five minutes into stoppage time. With the ball bouncing around the box, Ouattara popped up in the box to stab a shot into the roof of the net from point-blank range, stunning Ipswich at the death.
