‘Could be a big asset’: BBC pundit urges Ruben Amorim to sign left-back for Manchester United

Former Premier League player Andy Reid has named the Fulham defender he thinks would be perfect for Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur.

Neither United nor Tottenham are having a particularly great time at the moment.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs have lost three of their last six Premier League matches and are seven points off the final Champions League spot.

There have been one or two positive signs under new manager Ruben Amorim at United, but they are closer to the relegation zone than to the top four.

Robinson backed for Man United or Tottenham move

Both Spurs and United could do with making new signings in the January transfer window, and Reid has suggested Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson as a potential target.

The BBC Sport pundit made the comments about the left-back while watching him in action for Fulham against Arsenal at Craven Cottage in the Premier League on Sunday.

Reid said (BBC Radio 5 Live Online): “The Fulham fans won’t thank me for this, but Antonee Robinson could play at one of the bigger clubs in the league.

“He could be a big asset for Tottenham or Man United.”

Do Man United or Tottenham need a new left-back?

There is no urgent need for Tottenham to sign a new left-back. While Sergio Reguilon is unlikely to stay at Spurs for much longer, the club have a very capable player in Destiny Udogie.

Udogie is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, and he is only 22. Robinson, who was linked with Liverpool last summer, would be a good signing for Spurs, but there is no need for them to spend a lot of money on a new left-back.

Fulham reportedly wanted £40 million for Robinson last summer. There is no point in Spurs spending that much money on a player who will not be guaranteed a place in the starting line-up.

However, United could do with a new left-back. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have had injury problems. Manager Amorim needs a left-back he can rely upon to stay fit and deliver.

Robinson is 27 now and has played 50 times for the United States. He has made over 100 appearances in the Premier League in his career.
